In terms of the barriers to A Level Mathematics, something to think about may be the existence of Further Mathematics. Why is it that no other subject counts for two A Levels?
I'm certain all subjects could form a 'further' A Level. What about Further Biology or Further Music? What are the consequences of having a significant proportion of students putting double the effort in a subject, receiving double the subject lessons and gaining additional knowledge from the Further Mathematics course underpinning the content explored at A Level Mathematics? All of this in a subject that is largely foundational and built upon presupposed knowledge. Could these students be driving up the difficulty in exam questions leading to students taking only A Level Mathematics struggling for time? These are questions we should be asking as a society committed to improving the prospects of all its people and beyond.
I don't have the answers and I am unqualified to speak on this matter, perhaps you as a reader can contact the DfE here and ask.
I think you need to add some statistics and reference them! This will give credibility to your post.
